Sinhalite is rare gem found only in the gem gravels in Sri Lanka . Usually yellow brown and green and often comes in mixed parcels of semi-precious gems.
First discovered in 1952 and due to its rarity, much sought-after by collectors. Sinhalite gets its name from sinhala, the Sanskrit word for the island of Sri Lanka . Sinhalite is strongly pleochroic and a highly lustrous gem, and found almost exclusively in Sri Lanka .
The primary source is Sri Lanka , where gems of more than 100 carats have been found. Prior to 1952, sinhalite was thought to be brown peridot. Properly cut stones are quite attractive and very desirable in collections.
